Treated conditions
When you come in for treatment, up to 20 minutes or so could be spent discussing not only the immediate problem but also taking a full case history to build up a picture of your health. Not only will the practitioner spend time asking you questions relevant to your condition but may also use the tools of ‘pulse taking’ and ‘tongue diagnosis’ to gain more of an understanding of your condition and general health.

Treatment by acupuncture consists of the insertion of fine, sterile needles into carefully selected points of the body, which are stimulated to balance the circulation of energy. The number of needles varies, and they are typically left in place for 20 minutes. The number of treatments depends on both the patient and the nature of the condition being treated.

Each needle is used only once. They are prepackaged, sterile, stainless steel and are immediately disposed of after use. You may feel sensations of numbness, tingling, warmth, coolness, achieness in various parts of the body, which are normal.
Precautions
Do tell your acupuncturist if you think you are pregnant or have missed a period, or if you are trying to conceive, as you may be pregnant. A registered acupuncturist is suggested. Only eat a light meal before a treatment and avoid alcohol.
Does it hurt?
A slight dull sensation is sometimes felt when the acupuncture point is stimulated.
What if you are needle phobic?
Acupuncture needles are very fine, sometimes not much thicker than a human hair. If you really feel you cannot bear the thought of the needles at all, then acupressure maybe used instead.
