What to Expect
During your first consultation or treatment session, up to 20 minutes may be spent discussing the issue you would like addressed. This discussion may include a full medical history to gain a comprehensive understanding of your health. Alongside questions specific to your condition, the practitioner may also use traditional Chinese diagnostic methods such as pulse-taking and tongue diagnosis.
Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into carefully selected points on the body to stimulate energy flow. The needles are typically left in place for around 20 minutes, although the number used will vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated.
All needles are single-use, pre-packaged, sterile, and made from stainless steel. They are safely disposed of after treatment. You may experience sensations such as numbness, tingling, warmth, coolness, or a dull ache. These are normal responses.
Philip’s approach combines acupuncture with other therapies, which may include Tui Na massage (a form of Chinese medical massage that can be gentle or firm, depending on your condition), cupping, moxibustion, or simple Chinese herbal formulas. His approach is gentle, and techniques are adapted to suit your comfort and individual needs.
Precautions
Please inform your acupuncturist if you may be pregnant, have missed a period, or are trying to conceive. Consulting a registered acupuncturist is recommended. Eat a light meal before treatment and avoid alcohol.
Does It Hurt?
When the acupuncture point is stimulated, you may feel a slight, dull sensation.
What if you’re afraid of needles?
Acupuncture needles are very fine, often not much thicker than a human hair. If you feel uncomfortable with needles, acupressure can be used as an alternative, although results may vary.
